BRIEF HISTORY OF THE UON/KNH ETHICS REVIEW COMMITTEE

The Kenyatta National Hospital-University of Nairobi Ethics and Research Committee (KNH-UoN- ERC) has been in existence since 1974 and is the oldest ethics committee in Kenya. The committee was initially set up to serve the University of Nairobi, College of Health Sciences and Kenyatta National Hospital. Its mandate has however expanded over this period of time due to increased KNH’s and UoN’s national and international status and requirements for credible ethics and scientific review and oversight on the conduct of research.

KNH-UoN ERC is an institutional research committee established to protect the rights and welfare of persons participating in research activities conducted under the auspices of KNH, UoN and affiliated research organizations. KNH-UoN ERC reports to the Chief Executive Officer, KNH and the Principal, College of Health Sciences of the University of Nairobi.
